Why I buy from the UK and Ireland?

Having examined what is required for an SME reseller to answer the question “Can I buy from Asia?”, then we should reflect on why buying from the UK or Ireland, or more broadly Europe, remains competitive.

For resellers selling an increasingly broad range of business supplies categories, local sourcing will always be the majority of the supplier base. Within that, there are choices to be made between distributors, importers, manufacturers of different sizes and levels of specialism.

This article focuses on the benefits of local manufacturing over Asian manufacturing. Even when local sourcing doesn’t deliver the lowest unit price, it offers a different set of advantages: speed, flexibility, lower risk, more sustainable and a lighter operational load. As we explore these benefits, for many resellers, these will outweigh the headline savings of direct imports or inspire them to find more local manufacturing sources.

Cost Prices

Let’s start with the key purchasing metric, invoice cost price. Simply put, everything made is Asia isn’t cheaper than everything made in Europe, and every general rule doesn’t apply to every category. Here are 3 different business supplies product categories to demonstrate that variation.

  • Electronics are predominantly produced in Asia, this reflects lower labour costs, closer access to components and low freight costs. Increasingly, it is their higher investment in automation that is maintaining that advantage.
  • Moulded Plastics (e.g. letter trays, monitor risers) has tended to be split between Europe and Asia. The biggest challenge for UK/European manufacturers isn’t unit cost but tooling costs for innovation, therefore, China’s product development has tended to lead in categories like ergonomics.
  • Paper products are dominated by UK/European production due to good access to raw materials, well invested production facilities and the high freight costs of bulky low value products.

Therefore, for the purpose of this article, the base assumption is that the cost price in Asia is cheaper, otherwise, there isn’t a decision to be made, buy local.

Product Range and Innovation

One of the biggest advantages of domestic sourcing is agility. Buying locally allows you to:

  • Order in smaller quantities without committing to container volumes
  • Trial new products or enter new categories without long lead times or large financial exposure
  • React quickly to customer demand and market changes

This flexibility creates commercial opportunity. Local manufacturers can support:

  • Additional colourways
  • Market‑specific pack sizes
  • Promotional or seasonal bundles
  • Marketing inserts
  • Sampling campaigns

These are often difficult or uneconomic to do through direct import. Therefore, it is important to utilise these opportunities and value them before you look to change.

Compliance Simplicity more than Quality Level

After 25 years working with Asian factories, including being part of developing products in Taiwan to Jaguar Land Rover standards, I don’t accept that quality is determined by geography. There are excellent and poor factories everywhere.

However, compliance is unquestionably simpler with local manufacturing.

A manufacturer in‑country:

  • Shares responsibility for compliance
  • Understands local regulatory expectations better
  • Generally, offers more support on documentation, testing, and certification
  • Makes factory audits, inspections, and dispute resolution far easier

For many SMEs, this reduction in risk and administrative burden is a major advantage. You’re not managing compliance alone, and you’re not relying on long‑distance interpretation of regulatory requirements.

Stock, Delivery and Flexibility

To state the obvious, local sourcing’s biggest advantage is that it is local.

The shorter lead times mean you can:

  • Make stock decisions later and more accurately
  • Hold less stock
  • Respond to changes in demand quicker
  • Reduce the risk of obsolescence
  • Have less external risk in the supply chain: customs, ports, vessels

Beyond these basics, the best local manufacturers provide another next level of service and collaborative working. Examples, such as, the flexibility to offer lead times under 7 days, hold buffer stock on site to manage demand, or supplier managed inventory solutions. Ultimately, the ability to be flexible is at the heart of their service proposition.

Cash

Your working capital will always be better using local suppliers. Payment terms in the UK and Ireland are generally far more favourable than those available when importing from Asia and the terms start at receipt of goods. Both sides expect credit terms to apply and they will be somewhere between 30 and 60 days EOM from the beginning.

Benefits:

  • Payment after receipt, often after much of the product has sold
  • No deposits
  • No currency exposure
  • Predictable landed costs with no freight or duty surprises

Combined with a lower stock holding, this significantly reduces the working capital required to run your business. For many SMEs, this alone makes local sourcing the most sustainable option.

Sustainability

Buying locally manufactured goods helps you reduce your impact in the right places and increase your impact where it matters. Here are some of the sustainability benefits and potential that comes from local sourcing:

  • Reduce your GHG Protocol Scope 3 impact by simplifying and shortening supply chains
  • Simplify modern slavery reporting
  • Simplify regulatory compliance e.g. EUDR
  • Introduction of recycling and refurbishment schemes
  • Add social value through a positive impact on the local economy
  • Support a diverse supplier base

Therefore, local sourcing supports you delivering your ESG objectives and strategy, and achieve positive results within the new UK and European reporting frameworks (CSRD, SECR).

Conclusion

Focus your analysis on comparing Total Product Cost and account for those hidden benefits from local sourcing but ensure you make the most of them.

  • Commercial opportunities
  • Lower stockholding
  • Reduced obsolescence
  • Higher working capital
  • Sustainability
  • Compliance
  • Less operational risk

Direct import has its place, and is essential to be competitive in several product categories, but partnering with local manufacturers will take your product range, sales and profitability forward.
